KAHILWAYAN Festival (Sta.Barbara Iloilo)

This is Celebrated Every Nov. 17 in Commemoration of the Cry of Sta. Barbara.

An Ilonggo term for “freedom” or “liberty,” Kahilwayan is a dramatic cultural festivity showcasing the town’s rich history: the uprising of the Ilonggos against Spain leading to its ultimate victory and freedom. Reflected through the Cry of Santa Barbara, led byGeneral Martin Delgado, a native of the town himself, the presentation is elaborately choreographed with strong rhythms. The radical dance drama is coupled with dramatic stunts such as leaping, jumping and quick footwork on bamboo poles, mirrored the changes in society: suffrage for women and the rise of revolutionary movements.
